India: 'digital arrest' — video call with fake police
Supposed police or customs officers claim in a video call that your account is tied to a crime. Victims stay 'under digital arrest' for hours or days and transfer their savings for 'verification'. One retiree lost 30 lakh rupees.
Warning signs
- Police by video call — that does not exist
- You are forbidden to speak to anyone
- Money must be sent for 'verification'
What to do
End the call, phone your bank at once and report it to the real police.
